From
a very young age I can remember spending weekends in the garden, enjoying
the satisfaction of creating something which I could nurture and watch
flourish, spending pocket money on packets of seed and my own gardening
tools. A large part of our garden was dedicated to fruit and vegetables.
My
brother and I would spend hot summer days sitting in the plum tree picking
fruits and sending them down a length of drain pipe into a picnic
blanket so as they didn't bruise.
My first gardening competition was at the age of 9 and was to create a
beautiful garden in a plastic seed tray. I spent hours assembling this miniature
garden complete with tiny pond and hand-made statuary in the hope I might
impress the judges! To my amazement and delight I was presented with
1st prize, a five pound book voucher!! Little did I know this would be a
taste of things to come.
From university I worked for numerous years in retail, however in
parallel my leisure and pleasure was spent, some 8 years,
designing and landscaping our family garden. This was many hours of hard work
with my parents and brother who are also keen gardeners.
As friends and family saw the transformation we had created I was
approached
to undertake private garden designs and still continue to do so.
I had always wanted to pursue a career in the 'art world', especially in
special effects and set design as this was something which came naturally
and which I thoroughly enjoyed. I realized this was a very fickle industry to
work in and that I would always be working to somebody else's ideas. Now I
can now combine my artistic talent & passion for plants whilst
designing for other people.
Whilst studying the RHS level 2 certificate in horticulture, I was very fortunate to
meet Teresa, her husband Alan and Sam. We were kindred spirits and
decided to form our team, 'Moving Spaces'. We were astonished to be
accepted on our first application to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2007 for
our courtyard garden "Moving On..."
Teresa and
Alan have been such an integral part of the Chelsea project and initially
'sowed the seed' which projected us to where we are today. Alan was
nominated by the group to become project manager, utilising his wealth of
knowledge and experience in such roles. He has single handedly co-coordinated the entire build in
intricate detail to ensure a smooth and stress free build.
"An honor and a privilege to participate in the world's finest flower
show and hopefully the start of a new career." - Steve Putnam.
